Need a chance to get away from it all to focus on your craft? Want some fresh eyes on your work? Want a chance to chat with editor Deborah Halverson of Dear Editor fame? Have her critique your work? Join us for our Get Away to Create retreat at Mahoney State Park!
When: September 27-29, 2019 (Note: This is the rescheduled date)
Where: Beautiful Mahoney State Park; we will be in the cabins
More about our wonderful editor:
Deborah Halverson is the award-winning author of Writing Young Adult Fiction for Dummies and Writing New Adult Fiction, the teen novels Big Mouth and Honk If You Hate Me, the picture book Letters to Santa, and three books in the Remix series for struggling readers. Formerly an editor at Harcourt Children’s Books and now a freelancer specializing in picture books and YA/MG fiction and nonfiction, Deborah has been working with authors—bestsellers, veterans, debut, and aspiring—for almost twenty-five years. She is also the founder of the popular writers’ advice site DearEditor.com and serves on the advisory board for the UC San Diego Extension “Children’s Book Writing and Illustrating” certificate program.
This is an outstanding opportunity to get professional feedback on your work before showing it to an acquiring editor or agent!
Event details:
We have ten cabins reserved for our creative purposes. Each has two bedrooms, so everyone can have their own room. Cabins also have kitchenettes, general living areas, and lofts for some focused writing and illustrating time. And you can’t beat the views if you need to get outside and do a little hiking.
You are in charge of your own food, but feel free to coordinate with other attendees—the more the merrier for meals. More information will be available to participants closer to the event.
Please note in your registration whether you want to participate in a critique group and if so, what kind of writing and/or illustrating you do. It helps to have a group of PB writers, for example, and another of MG/YA. Have a critique group and don’t want to critique at the retreat? That’s up to you, but having a truly fresh set of eyes on your work can be enlightening.
We will plan to have social gatherings on both Friday and Saturday evenings. This is a chance to take a break from all that hard work and just chill out with your fellow creatives.
Cost (includes lodging and critique):
$350 for members (or $225 for one night only)
$425 for non-members
Can’t make it that weekend but want a critique and 15-minute phone call with Deborah? Choose the critique only option below!
Register by August 25. Pages for critique due September 6.
You will be contacted with more detailed information closer to the date and after you have registered.
