Indi-500 (word) Challenge

We’re kicking off 2022 with our second annual Indi-500 (word) Challenge! And this year we have TWO contests: one for writers and one for illustrators. This is an SCBWI Nebraska members-only race to finish a 500-word story or create an illustration in 48 hours.

• The live kick-off event will take place on Zoom at 7:00 p.m. on January 21.

• All completed stories and illustrations are due by 11:59 p.m. (Central Time) on January 23.

• The selected winner will get a free critique of a polished PB manuscript or first chapter of a MG/YA novel from an editor or free portfolio review from an art director. Runners up will receive a free webinar.

To participate, you must be a member of the Nebraska region and you must register. Only those who have registered will receive the link to access the kick-off event and have their entries considered for the contest.


The winning story for 2022 receives a critique
from Laura Godwin, VP & Publisher of Godwin Books!

Laura Godwin. VP & Publisher of Godwin Books, is the editor of the Caldecott Honor books Rosa by Nikki Giovanni, illustrated by Bryan Collier, Hondo and Fabian by Peter McCarty, and In the Small, Small Pond by Denise Fleming, as well as the Newbery Honor books The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly and Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin. She loves illustrated books of all kinds and is interested in nature, science, inspiring biographies, and middle grade fiction, and anything with a quirky or unusual point of view. Laura is currently working on a picture book biography of Robert Small by his great great grandson Michael Boulware Moore with Bryan Collier illustrating and a Coretta Scott King picture book autobiography illustrated by Ekua Holmes.

from Art Director Sharismar Rodriguez of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group!

Sharismar Rodriguez is a Senior Art Director at Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, where she designs and art directs creative picture books and graphic novels with her team for Roaring Brook Press, FSG Books for Young Readers, Feiwel & Friends, & Henry Holt BYR imprints. She graduated from Parsons School of Design and has been part of the Children’s Publishing industry for over a decade with numerous award-winning and noteworthy titles. Some of her recent work includes Outside, Inside by LeUyen Pham, Oddbird by Derek Desierto, and New York Times bestseller The One and Only Sparkella by Channing Tatum, among many others.
