Upcoming Events

This is our ongoing collection of upcoming events for SCBWI members. If you have an event you think our community would be interested in, let us know by clicking here!

Meet & Pitch
We’re excited to present Meet & Pitch, a new series of Zoom events designed to give our members the chance to get some face time with notable agents and editors. This series is a collaboration between five small SCBWI regions – Alaska, Nebraska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Brazos Valley, TX. Each Zoom session will include a presentation about the agency or publisher, an overview of their manuscript wishlist, dos and don’ts for submission, Q&A, and live pitches/first looks.

Writing from the Inside Out Nonfiction Workshop
Want to write a nonfiction children’s book but not sure where to start? Have lots of ideas but not sure which ones will work best? Unsure what format would best suit your current nonfiction manuscript? In this virtual workshop, you will dive deep into writing nonfiction and learn to create dynamic “true” books from the inside out.

Illustrator Intensive
Ready to hone your character design and visual storytelling and get a feel for what it’s like to work with an art director? Join us for an illustrators’ intensive with Lauren Rille, Art Director at Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. Based on Lauren’s assignment, you will develop initial sketches for her review, then apply her feedback to prepare your final pieces to share during the Zoom intensive. Registration due August 12

Reverse Outlining Using the Story Endings Matrix
In this virtual workshop, Jes Trudel will share her unique Story Endings Matrix tool which will help put endings into perspective. She’ll teach how to use reverse outlining to create a story tightly plotted from beginning to end. Participants will be able to work together in small groups to explore different possible endings to their stories, and practice reverse outlining. Workshop date: October 22.

Fall Social
We are bringing back quarterly social events! These are chances to gather with other kidlit creatives for a couple of hours to eat, chat, and get to know each other better. No set agenda beyond fostering those community connections that are so central to success in this industry! Please register for a head count. Event date: October 15.

Monthly Regional Meetings
Second Sunday of the month starting August 14
These meetings will include regional business and important information for members, a presentation by a guest speaker, and time for Q&A.

Shop Talk
First Wednesday of the month starting September 7
Join other members of our region to chat about all things kidlit! We meet via Zoom to talk shop, taking an interactive focus on craft and publishing. Each meeting typically has a short overview of some kidlit topic, with exercises and activities to get the creative juices flowing. Shop Talk is a great way to build your craft and get to know other kidlit creatives!

Regional Virtual Events
SCBWI members can take webinars offered by regions around the world. This is a list of upcoming virtual events on offer by various regions.
