Writing from the Inside Out Picture Book Workshop
Want to write a picture book but not sure where to start? Unsure how to think in pictures while writing your text? Have lots of ideas but not sure which ones will work best? In this virtual workshop, you will dive deep into picture book writing and learn to create them from the inside out.
Collaborative Picture Book Workshop
July 2021 to April 2022
Using Zoom, author Rebecca J. Gomez and author-illustrator Jessica Linn Evans will guide collaborative groups in the picture book planning process using the work of Anastasia Suen’s Picture Writing and a list of picture book mentor texts. These experienced creators will help you understand different approaches to writing picture books, as well as the all-important interplay between pictures and words.
Why should you participate?
You won’t be struggling to find the best way to write your stories on your own. With our collaborative model, you’ll have opportunities to get feedback on your work and deepen your own craft knowledge while helping other members of the group through the drafting process. By the end of the workshop, you should have at least three polished stories ready to query.
What else do you need to know?
Workshop meetings will take place via Zoom. These 90-minute sessions will take place on the second and fourth Saturdays from July 2021 until April 2022. You can see a more detailed schedule here.
This is an interactive workshop, so all participants are expected to attend meetings live. They will not be recorded for later viewing. Active participation is key to getting the most out of this experience. (But if you have to miss one, you will be able to get information from other attendees and will receive follow-up information from the faculty.)
You will need to purchase a copy of Picture Writing (out of print, but available on Amazon). All other mentor texts will be used during the course of the workshop and can be checked out from the library as needed.
June 24-26, 2022
Participants in the picture book workshop are also invited to participate in the Agent Retreat. Jennifer March Soloway, associate agent with Andrea Brown Literary Agency, will help you create and refine your submission package (queries and pitches) and will provide a 15-minute face-to-face consultation on the topic of your choice.
After the retreat, you will have an opportunity to query Jennifer. Those who participated in the picture book workshop will be able to submit to an additional list of agents that are open to submissions from workshop participants.
